Unfortunately I have not seen this error. If you can scan and see your device, at this point it should simply work. What kind of BT headset are you using? Does it support the basic sound profile or only A2DP?
Try to pair it only with you BT dongle first, maybe using the BT tool of Gnome. You could also try a dist-upgrade to 9.04.

need help connecting to bluetooth!
I updated my Ubuntu to 8.10 and I have the latest BlueZ software
My bluetooth pairs with my computer through a D-Link Bluetooth dongle. I can follow your post up until the part where I am supposed to do :

when I put this in the command line I get the error:
